Happy New Year and . . . .

I’m reading a great book on the history of film and found this “all through the years, or until recently, most film makers longed to come to America; examples are Wiliam Fox, born in Hungary as William Fried of German-Jewish descent in 1879.  He came to America and changed his last name as so many did.  In 1904 he bought a penny arcade, then built up a chain of theaters in the New York area; he formed the Box Office Attraction Company in 1912 to produce his own movies . . . . we now know his name because of the legacy which is now Fox Broadcasting and Rupert Murdoch’s empire, neither of which does the William Fried family profit from.  William Fox went down with the market crash of 1929.
